HISPANICS ARE CHANGING THE FACE OF U.S. POLITICS

Whatever you may think about Sunday's presidential forum on the Spanish-language Univisión network -- and there were some things about it that I found dreadful -- it was the clearest evidence yet of a growing Hispanic clout that will revolutionize American politics. The debate among Democratic hopefuls averaged 2.2 million viewers -- an extraordinary audience for a debate that was broadcast in Spanish for an ethnic group that makes up 13 percent of the U.S. population. By comparison, the CNN-YouTube Democratic debate averaged 2.6 million viewers. Read the whole column here, and let us know whether you agree.

Why is it that for everyone in the US anyone south of rio grande or anyone who looks too brown is "hispanic"?

Why is it, mr oppenheimer, that you proclaim ideas in the name of "hispanics" as if all of us were the same and think the same? Do you consider yourself ethnically or ideologically the same as a mexican farmer, or a native from the jungle, or a cuban...?

The only thing you guys have in common is that you are immigrants, so please stop using the same name the USA uses to refer to Latin Americans, to call yourselfs (immigrants).

I'm telling you these, because obviously the tensions that illegal inmigration causes will eventually have a negative effect on the image americans have of latin america. I don't support the way you, mr. oppenheimer, present the xenophobic perspective of some americans, as not legitimate, and then you (inmigrant, latin american, not citizen or anything) speak in the name of truth and wisdom...

Please, use your intelligence to invent a new word to refer to illegal-latinamerican-immigrants-whothinklikeyoudo, so you can stop using the name hispancs or latin americans, because you dont represent us.

thanks

By the way, your persistent arguments against the xenophobic americans, with out any sign of willingness to dialog or democratic acceptance of the others point of view will make things worse for people who share your ideas.

This is a nightmare, if the Hispanics change the US way of life to match their countries, we Americans are doomed. Imagine living in Bolivia, Cuba, Venezuela, Mexico etc..
These people dream is to leave their wonderful countries. Then if they are deported they cry and protest like they were to be sent to hell

yeah Diaz, the USA had better wake up. Any country is only as good as its people and there is a reason why you see Latin Americans paying their life savings to get the hell out of their countries.
I cannot stress enough that a country is just a reflection of its people.

IT's so obvious that Hispanic undocumetned immigrants are just the latest target in a long line of American immigrant waves, but at least now they have some semblance of input to the political process that doesn't involve an old boss-style paternalism as the Irish and Itilian immigrants had to deal with.
The Irish and Italians were also criticized for leaving their countries and bringing their ways and language to the US, only time proved the ignorant nativists wrong. Their countries also faced harsh criticism for not keeping their people at home, but so many countries go through difficult periods with high emigration to the land of immigrants...
The current climate, despite the debate, remains dangerous. The vicious nativists are just itching for any chance to attack undocumented immigrants and even hispanic immigrants in general. It's discusting, and dangerous, look at the republicans playing up to this crowd of hate-mongers. Look at candidates like tancredo and at reporters like lou dobbs. I hope and expect that the Republic party will be punished in many other states just as it was in California when Pete Wilson tried to save his final term as governor by bringing the illegal immigration-card into the debate... it sparked more citizenship drives and more democrats... and that was without democratic candidates holding spanish-language debates. There should be some gains in many states because too many Republicans still think that they are beholden to extremist xenophobes and nativists.
