President Bush's upcoming visit to five Latin American countries starting March 8 will be his biggest effort ever to improve ties with the region, but the trip may come too late to counter Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez's checkbook diplomacy and the growing anti-American sentiment in the region. To find out why, read the full column here, and let us know what YOU think.

Good to find out that Bush is coming to visit us - gives us time to prepare the posters and the street protests to denounce this monster that has led to the deaths of 800,000 Iraqi civilians in the last 3 years that his regime has "administered" Iraq.

If Oppenheimer wants to be taken seriously he had better start to join the rest of Latin America in declaring Mr. Bush "persona non grata" in Latin America .

åndêrs, first off, kudos to you for now referring to Lou Dobbs as an "isolationist" and not "racist xenophobe".
Secondly, exactly why do South Americans despise the USA for being in Iraq? It isn't their kids being killed on either side. Did South Americans despise Saddam Hussein for all the Iraqis he killed. And it isn't the USA doing the killings, it's Sunnis and Shiites killing each other.
My opinon: Latin Americans feel humiliated by the power projected by the USA/"Anglos" on the world stage.
Thirdly, please don't refer millions of Latin Americans forcing their way itno Anglolandia as "migration". Migration is when people move to another part of the world and set up their own society. Truth is, Hispanics are headed directly for the societies created by the Anglos and nobody is going to stop them from forcing their way into those Anglo societies. That is not migration. That is theft.

Paul Thørsen,

Believe it or not but there are plenty of Americans and Europeans who have decided to move and live in Latin America; not everyone shares your feeling that the US is paradise on earth especially with the current Bush regime there and his police state and all their "homeland" security hoopla and the killin' and maimin' of the hundreds of thousands in Iraq in the name of "democracy"....

In short- Latin America has plenty to offer- the real estate is cheaper; the wines are better and the women are still women. Millions of Europeans and Americans enjoy extremely high standards of living & quality of life in Latin America and who knows maybe even you will find this out for yourself one day.

You write that the US cannot "counter Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez's checkbook diplomacy" by which you imply that Chavez is distributing free gifts of billions of dollars of oil money in Latin America.

Are Chavez's investments in such things as Argentine government bonds "gifts" ?

Do you know how many US and European hedge funds and banks are investing in exactly the same Argetine government bonds ?

The simple fact of the matter is that Argentine government bonds offer a higher yield than the debt paper issued by the US government- this is no charity from Chavez- Venezuela is simply looking for a higher return on its billions of dollars of oil revenues.

If a Latin American government invests in US treasury bonds would you also call this "checkbook" diplomacy ? Maybe you can explain to your readers why it is acceptable for Latin American governments to invest in US treasury bonds whereas you do not find it acceptable for governments such as Venezuela to invest in higher yielding Argentine government bonds ?

Bush goes ballistic about other countries being evil and dangerous, because they have weapons of mass destruction. But, he insists on building up even a more deadly supply of nuclear arms right here in the US. What do you think? Is killing thousands of innocent civilians okay when you are doing a little government makeover?
Our country is in debt until forever, we don't have jobs, and we live in fear. We have invaded a country and been responsible for thousands of deaths.
We have lost friends and influenced no one. No wonder most of the world thinks we suck. Thanks to what george bush has done to our country during the past three years, we do!

That fellow must have taken a brain shrinking pill.

Now, about the topic: Bush, Bush, Bush. Bush has a job, and it is to fight terrorism and make people safe in the US. Where he's failing is in his floundering on the illegal immigration thing. I'm remember of Gulliver and the Lilliputians. As to people moving into Latin America from Europe---Boy, are they going to be disappointed. Meanwhile, Brown Papaya Face Chavez continues to fan the flames of inflation in Venezuela, ruin the economy, and the same process by which Cuba went to a place where a child is lucky to get milk until he/she is six years old.

Sure,Paul Thorsen,but the
first thing you do is to
retire either in Costa Rica
or Panama.
You should stay in your wonderful
country of yours,the U.S, right?
Not relocating down the border.
What jealousy are you talking about?
