SUNDAY'S VOTE MAY OFFICIALLY TURN VENEZUELA INTO AN ''ELECTED DICTATORSHIP''
Will Venezuela still be considered a democracy if it approves a referendum Sunday that would give President Hugo Chávez near unlimited powers? Will Chávez still qualify as an ''elected'' leader? I asked these questions earlier this week to Tom Shannon, the State Department's top official in charge of Latin American affairs. I was curious about his response, because when I asked him a few weeks ago whether Venezuela can still be considered a democracy, he answered ``Yes.'' Read his response and my opinion about it, and let us know what you think.

Personalmente prefiero otro tipo de presidente para mi pais. Menos personalista y mas institucionalista.
Pero más alla que seamos críticos de Chavez debemos RESPETAR la decisión que tomen los venezolanos.
Estados Unidos ya INTERFIRIO demasiado en la historia de Latinoamérica colaborando, por ejemplo, en el golpe contra Allende en Chile.
Hoy sería intolerable unas declaraciones como la de Kissinger cuando dijo que "NO SE PODIA ACEPTAR A ALLENDE POR LA IRRESPONSABILIDAD DE UN PUEBLO".
Da la impresión, que al menos por las declaraciones, Tom Shannon es más ubicado. Más político.
Aplaudo su vocación dialoguista y el respeto a las diferencias. Es una brisa de aire fresco que llega desde Washington.
