COLUMN: WILL ECUADOR JOIN THE VENEZUELA-CUBA-BOLIVIA "PEOPLE'S TRADE AGREEMENT"?
GUAYAQUIL, Ecuador -- When I interviewed President Alfredo Palacio earlier this week, the big question in this country was whether Ecuador would move toward Venezuelan radical leftist leader Hugo Chávez's camp. Ecuador's relations with Washington have nose-dived in recent weeks, and Chávez has invited Ecuador to join a ''People's Trade Agreement'' recently signed by Venezuela, Cuba and Bolivia. Yes, the whole hemsisphere is moving left as a reaction to right wing Cuban-backed Bush's Latin American policies.
A perfect example of the arm-twisting the US regularly employs on its "friends" in the region. Do they really think this is the way to take back Latin America?
The US is saying that if your Supreme Court dares find that a corporation committed a violation of its contract (which it did) and then metes out the sentence proscribed in the contracts, the US will blackmail you for everything they can in unrelated trade issues. If you have difficulty seeing the disgusting nature of this, just try imagine the reverse. Or maybe consider the swift OAS condemnation the US received on this (and support for Ecuador acting "within its rights.")
Washington and the media accomplices like Andres are trying to divide the region into 2 camps -either your with the US with Venezuela. This divide and rule tactice is well-known and all Latin leaders are trying every day to reject this false choice.
Ecuador is learning fast that needs to diversify. It can't rely so much on the US like it had. Last week their diplomats were in China, whose investments have quickly been filling holes. There is interest by Colombia in the now open oil sector. Again, the choice is not simply between Chavez or Bush.
Of course, the efforts by Venezuela to help Ecuador is not going unnoticed. Estimates of the recent refining deal say it will result in a $300 million benefit to the country. An interesting figure...

By the way; I will be going for and cheering Team USA. I think that kid Donovan has given our team something we desperately needed; personality. Can’t wait to see them play!
